your portfolio out of date? Are you new to the business or just
trying to build a portfolio? Mike Poynter can help you. In certain
instances Mike or Jamie will do Time for Print. If we are not
doing Time for Prints at that time then we will be glad to do
a 2 hour session for just $125 and you get all edit photos on
a CD along with a few 8x10s for your portfolio.
Time for Prints [TFP]
Time For Prints or "TFP"
is a term used to describe a trade between a model and a photographer.
The model poses for the photographer and in return she/he receives
prints and images to use in her/his portfolio. This is a great
way to start or add to your portfolio if you do not want to pay
hundreds of dollars to have prints shot. The drawback is that
the photographer is often looking to shoot what he wants not neccessarily
what you want in your portfolio. I will discuss your limitations
ahead of time and will make those are part of our agreement. A
photo release form is required that will spell out the agreed
terms of the shoot. Time
for Prints [TFP] is considered an actual paid modeling
assignment. This can be one of the highest paying assignments
some of you may ever get. The cost to get such a shoot done
would start at about $200 or more. You may achieve that with
only 2 or 3 hours of modeling time for a rate of $100 per hour
or more!! With the TFP exchange you will be required to sign
a release allowing the photographer to use the images for his
promotion and for sale as stock photos.
My standard offer is a CD of the edited master
Hi-Resolution files of all acceptable images taken plus two
(2) 8"x10" prints. I send the CD a few days after the shoot
and you can use it to select the images for your prints. This
offer is negotiable with experienced models. I am wiling to
provide more prints for those with more experience. I
am one of not many established photographers who will still
offer prints for time (TFP) shoots. I receive a lot of enquiries
every year yet I can only do a handful of prints for time or
time for CD shoots.
Even though you get free photographs from a
prints for time shoot, it is not simply a "get your prints free"
scheme. It is a co-operation between a photographer and a model
in which you, the model, have to take your share of responsibility.
Photographers shoot TFP for various reasons.
Sometimes they do this to "test" a new idea, new lighting, new
equipment, or new techniques. Other times it is done to determine
the value of a model for future paid projects. In my case, I
do it for two reasons: (1) to help out models, and (2) for the
enjoyment of creating with photography. True artists, after
all, are more interested in their art than they are in financial
gains obtained by it. Each photographer doing TFP has his or
her own needs and reasons, and each reason or need should be
respected. I stay busy with portraits, events and weddings so
working with models is where I can let me creativity shine.
Models shoot TFP to gain photos and experience.
A model without images in her "book" (portfolio) will likely
have a difficult time finding paying model work. Also, without
experience, it is unlikely that a model will be hired for paying
work. Nothing is more disturbing than receiving an email from
a model who states that they have no photos, have never modeled,
but is only interested in paying jobs. Just like a model or
other client does not want to hire a photographers who is just
learning, models who are just learning need to work pro-bono
for a while in order to hone their skills.
I am selective about who I am willing to do
TFP shoots with since I can't photography everyone. For my consideration
I will ask for some sample photos of you. Even if you have no
prior experience these photos will help me determine what type
of shoot we should aim for. Anyone under
18 will have to provide parental consent and have a guardian
present during the photo shoot. We will not do swimsuit or any
nude pictures for anyone under 18.
